Changing world by social media

Looking over the past years, we can say that social media has changed everyone’s way of living. Social media has impacted almost every field, whether its marketing, advertising, event management, social and professional networking. Let us view some examples, the traditional way of newspaper, television and radio news channels have been reduced due to online news website, YouTube news video and RSS feeds. Also, people seeking employment can easily apply for a job online (Monster, Job search, Linkedin) whereas companies seek their valuable employees through some professional networks (Linkedin). Google is the best source of information rather than browsing information in libraries. In the past the best way to connect was phone calls and letters, but now Facebook and Twitter are the best way to connect friends and families. Video calling and video chats became more popular after 3G came into existence. Letters, which took days and months to deliver, are replaced by emails, which takes a single click to send and receive. Even online shopping is making its way in this changing world. These changes took a very short span of time to change people life. Within some years, social media would totally replace these traditional ways. There are few places in the world where traditional ways are used by the people as they are unaware about these media. Social media is growing at a full pace. If these people cannot reach the social media, social media would definitely reach them. Social media is not only a social media, but it is media for professionals, marketers, business people and all others. People living faraway are getting closer, but people living nearer are getting away. People are updated about the activities going around the world, but do they care about what’s going around them. This new media has changed the way people interact with others. People are addicted to these networks, that they are ruining their personal relations and their real friends. A better technology cannot be predicted, because social media has done unpredictable things and would be doing it.

According to Malcom Gladwell, a well-known author in the area of social media,

social media are built around weak ties and real social change can never come

from loose networks of people that do not know each other. Do you think that

social media has the potential to bring about real social change?

According to my past two posts on Social media, it is definitely confirmed that social media had a great power in the present world. Now the question arises, whether social media has the potential to bring about the real social change? Malcolm Gladwell said that social change cannot come through these strangers who don’t even know each other. Well at some point, it is true. Nothing can be most effective as the real world, real relations do. Watching the last few years’ stats, it had been seen a millions of people have started dating online, seeking partners. Many of them who met through this social websites even got married. One of the negative effects had been to married people, as some of them started making affairs through these public websites. The above example was the best of social media bring about the social change. Also, people had been creating their friends network, work network through these social websites. The best examples are Facebook and LinkedIn. Is der any point in forgetting twitter? No way, Twitter had been the fastest network, spreading news via tweets. As you can watch the graph in my first social media’s post, since 2010 the tweet had been increased more than 50 million daily. You can also call Twitter as the revolutionary site. There had been lots of news who took just a minute to spread over many countries. This was done by tweets on twitter which also brought about many changes. For example, people of Iran would not have felt confident to demand their freedom and democracy, this was done by twitter.

In 1960, nearly 70,000 people joined for the protest for the issue in Greensboro, North Carolina. The protest started from 4 people and ended to 70000 after a month. This is really a large number in those days without the aid of social media. Now imagine this protest in today’s world with social media as a tool. I am sure it would have reached to millions and the time would have reduced from a month to a day. So, you can now predict the power of social media. People do dating, search partners, built relations, patch-up, broke up on these sites but there are some real bonds which cannot be built through social media and it needs the real approach. <3

There are many relations which start on Facebook and ends on it. You can take me as an example. Lolz. However, social media can act as the first step towards bringing social change and the real effect would be when it’s actions start performing in the real world.

Has social media changed the quality of information and news ?

Social media has definitely changed the quality of news and information. It is better to say that the presentation of news has been increased by social media because the news remains the same but the way they attract the people matters more than the news. We can see in the different news websites that most recent headlines and the popular news are stacked on the main page with the photos of the news. This let the people to find their choice of news in the easier way. Also they can search the news based on some categories such as sports, hollywood, business, politics and many others. Also nowadays many social media websites such as facebook and twitter had been the source of news for millions of people. Most news updates are posted on some pages, some groups and many people spread it by posting it as their status on facebook. I got to know about MJ’s death, Steve Jobs death, earthquake, etc. from the facebook updates. Sometimes rumors as a part of news spread on these websites as it allows any user from anywhere to create news (rumors). For example, there were tweets about Atif Aslam’s (singer; Pakistan, India) death before a year when he was actually alive. It mostly depends on the source of news and people liking about these sources. If the news is from their trusted supplier, they would definitely believe on their quality.

Social media has not only increased the quality of information and news but also the speed of spreading the news has been increased by social media. Compared to the newspaper, through which we can get news, the other day of any event occurred and also it takes some time to get the news on TV or radio, but with social media the news spread much faster than these traditional ways. RSS feed is one of the example through which people get to know their news from their trusted supplier in a fast and better way.

I never thought

I never thought
my money would change from a rupee to a dollar...
I never thought
my dreams would change from a desi girl to blonde beauties...
I never thought
my daily drink would change from a cutting tea to a medium coffee...
I never thought
the climate would change from +44 to -24...
I never thought
the fall would change from water droplets to snowfall...
I never thought
my greeting would change from "kem cho" to "heya wassup"...
I never thought
my departure would change from "chal kale malye" to "alrite, cya later"...
I never thought
my name would change from JAY to JAE...

But things never happen the way we think, Adapt the change...
I never thought, it would
But it did...

Social Media - A Biggest Shift

I believe Social Media is the biggest shift since industrial revolution. The recent statistics states that 96% of Generation Y has joined the social network. We can find almost every people on social networks such as Facebook, Twitter, Myspace or any other networks. Also, recently stats showed that Facebook added more than 1.5 million of content which includes blogs, links, notes, photos which are shared on it every single day. Facebook is not just a social networking website, but also a place for professionals. It has been said that in the past we have to find the news, but now the news find us. Same is for the products and services. Before we find them, they find us via social media. Not only Facebook, Twitter has also been a most common network now. Last year, Tweets grew to 35 million per day and now a days, there are more than 50 million tweets everyday which is an average of 600 tweets per second. 80% of Twitter and Facebook usage is on mobile devices, which also cause shift in the market for smartphones. People update anywhere, anything and anytime. Today, news spread much more faster through social media rather than TVs, Radios or any other media.

Youtube is the second largest search engine in the world. youtube count hits 3 billion views per day and 48 hours of video are being uploaded per minute. Porn activity has been taken as the number one activity rated by social media. Wikipedia has more than 13 million articles and more and more articles are added everyday. It serves as the best sources of information. 80% of companies use Linkedin as the primary tool to find employees which indicates that social media has also changed the job seeking procedures. Social media plays a bigger role in this present world but on the negative side, it is replacing traditional methods of communication and interaction.
